DEVOTION: March 3

The concept of metamorphosis was suddenly in crisp view and surrounded me everywhere I looked. Our lives in cycles of transformation; over and over, we birth, we crawl, we cocoon, we fly. I saw it in my own life and the lives of my friends and family. And I saw it all over the Bible — in the lives of David, of Abraham, of Joseph. I saw it in the journey of the Israelites out of Egypt, in the woman with the issue of blood, even in the life and death of Jesus.

What I saw was that the places we feel stuck—where we bottom out in boredom or barrenness, disease or disinterest, fear or faithlessness—are actually intentional phases of transformation:

You could be birthing — God is birthing dreams and promises and visions in you, confirmations seeming to pop up everywhere.

You could be crawling — mourning the dream that seems to have died. Feeling God has abandoned you; it feels too hard, not worth it. Left feeling like you’re in captivity or failure or hiding.

You could be cocooning — feeling isolated or alone or tested. The middle place, where the fighting is done but the waiting feels unbearable.

Or you could be flying — trusting God has said it’s time. Leaping off the edge, spreading your wings and willing to fly.

My friend, you are not stuck. And though it feels unfair, there is purpose exactly where you are. Because it will ultimately make you a beautiful, vibrant, flying creature. If you let Him do it.

As you read these initial descriptions of the transformation cycles, does one stand out to you as where you are right now? Journal your immediate reactions and offer them as a prayer to God, asking Him to reveal His purpose to you right where you are today.

“For you have acquired new creation life which is continually being renewed into the likeness of the One who created you; giving you the full revelation of God.” (Colossians 3:10, The Passion Translation)
